After completing the tonal compositions in Kaleidoscope Dances, I decided to continue working with tonal music in the jazz idiom. I chose five jazz tunes I like (Anthropology by Charlie Parker, Giant Steps by John Coltrane, Cherokee by Ray Noble, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, and Windows by Chick Corea) to be played by a string quartet. While jazz is a notably improvised music, I decided to improvise (compose) all of the parts myself. I attempted to keep the unique character of each tune and the style of each era of jazz in which it was originally created (Bird is bebop, Trane is modern, Not to Bop is mainstream, Java is cool, and Glass is crossover). The digital realization of these tunes heard here does not do justice to the music or jazz. The computer is notoriously bad at even approximating jazz.
