The Urban Trilogy for jazz big band was first composed in 1983 while I was living in Sommerville, Massachusetts and working as a freelance jazz musician and accompanying dance classes in the Boston area. Triskadeccaphobia (fear of 13) alternates between a 13/4 meter and a waltz. Warren's Suspenders is dedicated to my friend Warren Senders. While I was composing this music, somebody broke into my apartment and stole the flute I had purchased from my teacher and with which I was making a living. The third movement of Urban Trilogy (Slummerville) reflects some of the anger and anguish I experienced at the time. I added strings to this third movement as a love counterpoint to the negative emotions. I revised Urban Trilogy during 2009-2012.
