I composed X-4 to enter it into a composition contest sponsored by the Composers Consortium in New York City. A rule of the competition was that the music must have something to do the generation the composer was born in. I made a quick calculation and figured out that I am four generations before Generation X, hence X-4. The rhythm and counterpoint are manipulations of the Morse Code pattern spelling "forever young." The piece won the competition and was premiered at a concert in NYC. During performance, the percussionist finished the piece 4 bars ahead of the rest of the ensemble thus rendering the recording unusable. What you can listen to here is an digital version exported from Finale software.
